28. Main Function of the Contact Rebus

The main and vital function of the contact rebus is to connect with others and yourself.

To sum up, we can find the main function, the general principle, that holds true for all contact rebus capacities (Motivational Work, Part 1: Values and Theory, pages 158) :

 All functions of the contact rebus ensure the optimum maintenance and reinforcement of a person’s life force so that he or she may live and develop along the intra- and interpsychic dimensions.

The contact rebus exists in all kinds of relationships, not just between lovers. Therefore, the contact rebus theory is a general theory of how people bond and deal with the life force inherent to their positive cores.

The contact rebus is not a “thing” in the human psyche; instead, it is a term for a complex and vital purpose in the psyche’s response. The building blocks of the contact rebus can therefore comprise all the different parts of a human mind. Intrinsically, this could be thoughts and feelings; extrinsically, words and deeds.

Interpersonel Contact Rebuses

In all interactions between human beings, there are always involved contact rebuses. Here is a list of interpersonal contact rebuses. They all have the same main function.

aggressive contact rebus, compliance contact rebus, withdrawing contact rebus, aggressor-victim contact rebus, transmitted and received contact rebus, untransmuted and transmuted contact rebus, constructive contact rebus, destructive contact rebus, equal and unequal contact rebus, temporal contact rebus, ascribed untransmuted temporal contact rebus, achieved untransmuted temporal contact rebus, couple contact rebus, group contact rebus, family contact rebus, and organizational contact rebus.

Intrapersonal Contact rebuses

Intrapersonal contact rebuses exist within the person’s psyche. However, they have the same vital purpose as interpersonal contact rebuses.

Nevertheless, here is a short summary:

Inner Integral Person vs. Inner Reflective Person

The organization of the contact rebuses facilitates an internal interaction between the inner reflective person and the individual’s intrinsic and extrinsic worlds. At the same time, there is an understanding in the experiential stream that the person experiencing all the inner contact rebuses is the same being, an entity in himself. This part of the inner person we can call the inner integral person.

It has additional functions, too: it determines whether the contact rebus is endogenous or exogenous (i.e., whether it is an inner or an outer contact rebus). It also distinguishes the inner-inner contact rebuses from when the individual performs a concrete action in the real world via an inner contact rebus.

The inner integral person thus decides if the contact rebus is linked to the external reality (outer-inner and inner-outer contact rebuses) or if it comes from within the individual (inner-inner contact rebuses) and gives rise to a continual experience of the singularity of identity.

Mutual Dependency

This means that the inner integral person has dual functionality, creating the experience that all inner contact rebuses belong to the same person and setting apart that person’s inner world from his outer.

There are two kinds of the inner person, one related to the experience of a psychical entity and one associated with a specific understanding of reflection and observation (inner reflective person). These two components are mutually dependent. The former must exist for the latter to have a personal entity over which to reflect, the latter being a cohesive force that gives the former meaning.

In this way, the inner person is inside and outside itself. Its two separate experiential zones also fulfill two different functions; they are continual contact rebuses and, as such, interact with the other inner contact rebuses. This interaction determines the type of inner contact rebus to integrate with the inner person. Given the dual functionality of the inner person, we can modify the inner contact rebus schema thus:

Inner Inner Inner Rebuses vs. Inner-Inner-Outer Rebuses

Inner-inner-inner contact rebuses are thus perceived as belonging to the part of the inner person we call the inner reflective person. In contrast, the inner-inner-outer contact rebuses are formed outside the inner reflective person (but still within the individual). They are thus determinable to the inner reflective person.

Inner-inner-outer contact rebuses are experienced as being relatively remote from the inner reflective person while emanating from the psyche alone. Even though they belong to the psyche, they can be experienced as less intimate, even foreign.

The individual might also experience the inner reflective person lacking the same degree of control over these rebuses as it has. The inner-inner-outer contact rebuses are more intuitive, and while they simply “appear”, the inner-inner-inner contact rebuses are more associated with conscious thought. Similarly, we can say that the inner-inner-outer contact rebuses are experienced as emanating from the depths of the soul.

A Variety of Rebus Encounters with the Same Main Function

The consciousness is designed to enable encounters, the active component of contact rebuses. The classification of the inner contact rebuses by the inner person (integral and reflective) allows a variety of rebus encounters. The purpose is always to fulfill the main function of the contact rebus.

The first is between the outer-inner and the inner-inner contact rebuses, being the interface between the individual and the outside world in general; a second is between the inner-inner-outer and the inner-inner-inner contact rebuses and represents an intrapsychic encounter; and a third is between the inner-inner contact rebuses and the inner-outer, being the communication between the individual and the outside world.

There is also an interaction between the inner integral person and all other inner contact rebuses and between the inner reflective person and all inner-inner-inner contact rebuses. A unique interaction also occurs between the inner integral person and the inner reflective person since these two contact rebuses are the most durable.
