Strategies for Work with Involuntary Clients
third edition
Edited by Ronald H. Rooney and Rebecca G. Mirick
Columbia University Press May 2018
According to this blog writer, the anthology is an excellent anthology summarizing in theory and practice the present know-how about working with unmotivated clients from different perspectives. Included is also information on relevant research results and their implications for practice strategies.
It is edited by Ronald H. Rooney, professor emeritus at the School of Social Work, University of Minnesota, and Rebecca G. Mirick licensed clinical social worker and assistant professor at Salem State University. It is a helpful collection of essays. The editors and the contributors manage to convey that we can be respectful of a client’s rights while not being too easily put off by understandable resistance.
This book provides a theoretical framework for understanding the legal, ethical, and practical concerns when working with involuntary clients, offering theory, treatment models, and specific practice strategies influenced by the best available knowledge. Animated by case studies across diverse settings, these resources can be used by practitioners to facilitate collaborative, effective working relationships with involuntary clients.
Recommendation:
In conclusion, I would urgently recommend that you read the whole book as an introduction to the field with all its ethical, theoretical, and practical complications.
Furthermore, in this anthology, I have written chapter 16: “Work with unmotivated clients” (26 pages). It can be used as a short introduction to my method “Motivational Work”.
